5 Black Squares - Project 1
Learning Objectives
To use your intuition to create compositions that evoke specific feelings (aesthetics), to develop good habits with regard to the design process, and to continue to create works that have no unintended visual information (i.e. well-crafted final pieces).
Assignment
Using five black squares of the same dimension (cut from black Artagain paper), create one graphic image to express the meaning of each of the following four words: congestion, individuality, tension, and playfulness. Compose these squares within a 10β x 6 3/16β delineated field with a 1β border on all sides. These are the same dimensions as the one black square exercise. Your finals should be flapped and labeled just like the exercise.
Process
- Begin this project by making 15 quick, small sketches for each word (thumbnails, 60 total).
- After an in-class review process (critique), you will push your best three ideas for each word forward by creating half-size compositions (roughs, 12 total).
- After an in-class critique, you will push your best idea for each word forward by creating a full-size composition (tight roughs).
- After an in-class critique, you will create a full-size composition for each word using the final materials specified on this sheet (comprehensive or final comp).
- identify your work using the specified template in the One Black Square exercise, but you must also add the word (aesthetic) you are visually communicating.
Craft
Craft counts and you will be graded on it. Please take the time to clean up all stray pencil marks, smudges, and excess rubber cement. Make your lines straight, sharp, crisp and clean. DO NOT LEAVE THIS PROJECT UNTIL THE NIGHT BEFORE ITβS DUE!
