Exercise 4 - Geometric Objects
Assignment
You will start by drawing a box in perspective. Then you will add (or subtract) at least 5 geometric shapes from the box (with partial construction lines) to create a more complex form. You may enhance your form’s realism by adding small details and surface textures, however you should keep the overall form fairly simple. This exercise is about perspective and value. Make your perspective accurate and use the entire range of values.
Note
Many of the student examples below are of architectural structures, but you can draw any kind of object (like a turn table, a dresser, or a DSLR camera). However, choose a form that is made up primarily of geometric primitives (e.g. a DSLR camera is a basically a cylinder and a box, as is a hifi turntable). Have fun, and go beyond the instructor demo.
Craft
Make your lines straight, sharp crisp and clean. Clean up any pencil marks, smudges, and fingerprints. Use an entire sheet of drawing paper for each drawing. Protect them in a folder. You will need them for critique week in the spring.
Materials
Drawing paper and drawing pencils (5H to 8B)
Deliverables
8.5 by 11 inch Drawing of a fully rendered object made of at least 5 geometric “primitives” with cutaways and additions Include a value scale.
Value - 50pts
Points are earned by accurate perspective, high level of detail, wide value range, high level of craft, and following instructions including meeting all of the specifications in the project brief (this page).
