Lego House - Project 3
Introduction
At this point, we have learned how to use our drafting tools, how to layout a page for a set of working drawings, how to create a title block, and how to produce common graphic symbols used within the interior design field for plan and elevation drawings.
In addition to these skills, we have discovered the Principles and Elements of design, and have started to explore the design process through stages like early thumbnail sketches, roughs, and tight roughs which all lead to the final design.
With these new skills, now it’s time to put them together to design a house!  But before you start digging out the latest design magazines, we are going to keep this manageable and start with simple building materials--LEGOS!
Purpose
The purpose of this project is three-fold. First, this assignment is designed to encourage you to think in 3 dimensions while gaining experience representing an object in 2 dimensions.  Second, this project allows you to continue to utilize the various tools associated with hand drafting by creating a partial set of working drawings featuring technical plans and elevations of the house.  Third, you will start to explore the process of constructing and organizing dimensions; an important component of technical drawings.
Objectives
- Develop and design an original house made out of LEGOs.
- Utilize an architectural scale and your hand drafting tools to produce an accurate, professional set of working drawings of your original LEGO house design.
- Continue to develop your hand lettering abilities.
- Practice and develop dimension construction and formatting.
- Continue to develop the practice of including all required elements and following directions
Requirements
Create a partial set of working drawings by hand-drafting the following views of the house:
    1. One floor plan
    2. One front elevation
    3. One additional side elevation
Each page of the working drawings must include:
- A label providing an overall title for the drawing as well as the scale in which it is drawn, which is located directly below the floorplan.
- A border drawn a ½” in from the edge of the paper, measuring 1/8” thick and shaded solid.
- A title block on the right side of each page with the following information:
    1. Project name and number
    2. Student name
    3. Scale
    4. Page number
    5. Date
    6. Class name and number
- a north arrow on your plan view
- elevation symbols to refer to additional drawings.
- Paper Size is 11” x 17”. LEGO houses must be drawn at 1/8” or 1/4” scale. In order to fit on your 11” x 17” vellum paper.
- House sizes cannot exceed 60’ in any direction for 1/8” scale, and 30’ in any direction for ¼” scale.
- All drawings must include a label that lists a number, a drawing title, and the scale.
Process
- Begin by producing 5 different conceptual drawings (large thumbnail sketches) of your original house design.  Drawings can be in plan view, elevation, perspective, or a combination of all approaches. Challenge yourself! Have fun!  Create something other than a rectangle. You’re getting to play with LEGOs after all!!
- After completing your sketches, decide which concept you want to build.  On Oct. 15th, you will present your drawings to the class in an informal presentation.  Talk about your various concepts and tell the class which one you are planning to build and why.  Discuss how your strongest concept works with the principles and elements.  Do not tell us you are choosing a certain design because it will be the easiest to build!
- After your presentation and critique from the class, build your best design using LEGO or LEGO-type building blocks. (The Department  has some, but you may also choose to purchase some of your own.)
- The house must include two doors and at least two windows.
- Utilize your hand drafting tools and begin drawing the plan view of your final house design on tracing paper.  Keep in mind, plan drawings are flat with no perspective.  Trace your final drafted drawing onto your vellum.
- Once the plan view is drawn, add appropriate dimensions utilizing formatting discussed and demonstrated in class.
- Follow the same process to draw the front elevation of the house.  Include material labels utilizing formatting discussed in class. Repeat this step for the additional side elevation.
- After you have completed the work on vellum, make black-line copies in full scale (do not reduce) to be turned in for grading. Make sure all copies are centered, neatly trimmed, and bound on the left hand side of the set.
Deliverables
- One set of black-line copies of your working drawings following the requirements stated above.
- Original vellum set of working drawings following the requirements stated above.
- Set of 5 conceptual sketches of your original LEGO house design. Your concept sketches and your participation in the required presentation are worth 10% of your grade.
- Your physical LEGO house made of LEGOs or LEGO-style bricks.
