Name Frame - Project 1
Assignment
Create a 3D composition of your name spelled out using paper products to construct the letters. Your composition should communicate more than just the letters in your name. It should communicate something about you. In essence, this is a self-portrait.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the project students will be able to:
- Construct complex 3D objects
- Use abstract elements to express something about themselves visually
- Use the design process to work toward a solution through a series of experiments
- Demonstrate strong craftsmanship
- Temper frustration and work through difficult design and craft problems
Specs
Your final piece will be made from paper products (including cardboard, chipboard, and various weights of paper). You may decorate the paper products in a manner that is consistent with your conceptual approach using whatever materials are necessary. You will present your composition in a “shadow box” picture frame (8”x10” unless otherwise specified by your instructor).
Process
- 50 thumbnails that explore multiple ways to express something about yourself. You should consider the aesthetic potential of letterforms, the context for your letters, and their arrangement.
- With feedback from peers and your instructor, create 10 rough sketches that push your best ideas further
- With feedback from peers and your instructor, experiment with physical materials to create 3 refined roughs. These are not sketches. They are physical compositions that refine your rough ideas and show how you plan to construct your final
- Based on feedback from your instructor, construct a tight rough at full scale using final materials
- Adjust or refine any problems identified with your tight roughs to produce a well-crafted final.
