“Not Your Mama’s Office” Design - Project 3
Purpose:
For this project, you will be exploring the furniture selection and arrangement of a small group of offices for a local small business. The space must include an executive office, a general area with a space for reception, work spaces for two additional employees, and a small conference space in addition to other needs detailed in the written profile attached to this project description. You will complete a digital book that includes a concept statement, the furniture plan of the offices with furniture tags, a table you create that includes images of your furniture selections, the name of the manufacturer, and the prices, as well as a rendering of a custom storage piece located in the executive office.
You will create working drawings and a program (a list of needed furniture and accessories) for a small creative company owned by an artist/designer. Use the client profile provided along with your own research to develop a design concept for the office. As you develop your furniture arrangement for the spaces, ensure you are implementing all applicable building codes and ADA codes, and adhering to federal regulations.
Process / Requirements:
Programming:
- Read and analyze the client profile. Conduct research related to the type of business and specific design solutions might be required to achieve maximum comfort and function.
- Prepare a program--what are the clients’ needs? What are the clients’ aesthetic preferences? Create a list of furniture and accessories that the client requires.
- Develop a design concept based on the client’s needs--write a concept statement for your solution for the spaces. (250-300 words)
Furniture Arrangement:
- Develop conceptual sketches for furniture arrangements of each space (3 minimum, use color).
- Using the floor plan and dimensions provided, develop a finalized furniture plan with furniture tags (just like key notes!). This must be a neatly drafted in 1/4” scale. Poche’ the walls, and show all doors swings with doors fully opened (not like the example shown on the second page).
- Draft out your furniture arrangement for the spaces listed. Use furniture templates, or create symbols that are the correct scale, and represent the items accurately.
Furniture Selection:
• Select FF&E (furniture, finishes and equipment) based on the client’s needs and desires.
• Compile a table that includes:
• the area an item is located (office, conference room, reception)
• the tag number you assigned to each piece
• an image of your selected piece / item
• the name of the piece,
• the dimensions (where applicable)
• the manufacturer
• the number of units required
• Code Compliance information
• the price per unit
• total price if more that one unit is required
Furniture Design:
Develop a custom bookshelf or cabinet to hold artwork and / or collectibles.  Use the furniture you select as inspiration for your design. Produce a two-point perspective rendering of your design. Show proper proportions, material representation, and strong craft of rendering.
Presentation:
- Prepare a digital presentation book for your client.
- Book must be 11” x 17” and submitted as a PDF.
- You may use PowerPoint, Word, or InDesign to create your book.
- Play with graphics and font choices throughout your book to create a cohesive layout that also reflects your overall concept for the space.
Your book will include:
- A cover page
- Your concept statement
- Your conceptual sketches of your furniture arrangements.
- Inspirational imagery to convey your design concept for the spaces. This can include images, color swatches, textural imagery, and original sketches.
- Drafted furniture plan with furniture tags and a key.
- Table with required information (see list at left).
Deliverables:
-A PDF document that includes all of the components listed above, including a two-point perspective drawing, in color, of your custom piece. The perspective should be drawn at a 3/4 view. Media is open! You can use colored pencils, markers, or whatever supplies you have at your disposal.
-Please save your original drawings for your portfolio!
