Technicolor City - Project 4
Introduction
So far you’ve worked mostly on your own, but now we’re going to work both solo and as a big group. What? Yes! This is often how you’ll have to work in the professional world. You’ll work on your part of a very large project and then check in periodically to be sure what you’re doing fits into what the rest of the team is doing.

Assignment
Sooooooo....as a large team we’re going to build a Technicolor City. Your individual part of the city will be 12” wide x 12” deep x 12” to 24” high in full color. BUT, this does NOT mean you just go off and build your little part and then force them all to fit together! NOPE!

Learning Outcomes
By the end of the project a successful student will be able to:
- Work in a team to define and achieve project requirements
- Identify visual and conceptual elements that define an aesthetic
- Design a unique component within a defined visual and conceptual system
- Use visual elements to create unity while still meeting functional requirements

Collaboration
As a class you will decide:
What is the style of your city. Is it cosmopolitan? Is it a small town? Is it Steam-punk or Gothic? Is it futuristic? Is it retro? What is it?
What is the overall layout of the city? Is it industrial on the South-side and ritzy on the north? Does it have a strong downtown? Where is the residential area? Where’s the shopping area? What’s the landscape like (flat, hills, mountains, ocean, lake, river)? What’s the outer shape of the city from above?
Once you’ve decided on these things, you’ll divide up the city and work together to create the whole thing. You’ll need to work on it individually, but you can’t just make something that doesn’t fit into the whole. Think about, look at, and discuss what the person next to you is doing. This doesn’t just mean the person to the right of you. It means what’s the person to the left, front and back of you doing? Does your design fit into the overall plan of the city and the neighborhood? Do the roads line up? Do the other transitions?
As a class you’ll also want to decide on what materials you’ll use for what part of the city to ensure there is a cohesive aesthetic to the entire scene.
Specs
Materials as decided by the class. Please limit use of metal as it is heavy, expensive, and hard to work with. (12”wide x 12”deep x 12”-24”high)
