Exercise 1 - Xs and Os
Learning Objectives
To expand brainstorming capabilities.
Assignment
This exercise was actually a clever advertising campaign for Panamericana School of Art and Design. (Google it and check it out!) Believe it or not, in the early stages creativity is all about QUANTITY! Draw as many things as possible that originate from Xs or Os. The X or O can be the focal point, but it doesn't have to be. You can combine multiple Xs or Os into a single doodle, but this is about generating as many ideas as possible. Don't be lazy, but if you need two Xs for your idea, use them. Stay loose, get weird, and have fun!
Process
1. Use up all of the Xs or Os on the page. Don't think too hard just drop the pencil on the paper and doodle away.
2. Once you have filled the page, go back and add more detail where necessary. Take your initial ideas and make them a bit more specific.
3. Now see if you can get the viewer (the rest of us) to notice your best ideas by making them a bit darker and by adding even more detail.
Deliverables
2 sheets, one of Xs and one of Os
Materials
Copy paper and drawing pencils (4H to 8B)
Value - 10 pts
Points are earned by using every X or O on the page. This is about quantity not quality... but have fun and make it worth doing!
